Joshua Chan's Personal Trainer Journey

We managed to catch up with Josh despite his busy training schedule and asked him a few questions about how he started in the fitness industry after being a NCSF Certified Personal Trainer:

How did you get started in PT?

I had a fulltime job and started working as a freelance PT as a side hustle. As I started getting my clients to reach their fitness goals, I realised it gave me a lot of purpose and I had a lot of energy for the work, and I eventually decided to pour my heart and soul into it by going full-time.

How much did you charge when you first started and how much do you charge now?

I started off charging $100 per hour and after a year of doing it full-time I’m charging up to $160 per hour.

3 best things about being a PT:

1.      Fulfilment. If you have had a personal journey with fitness, you will have the conviction of how transformative it can be, and helping others to do the same will feel empowering and purposeful.

2.      Autonomy. For the most part, you work solely for yourself. Thus, how many or how little hours you want to put in, as well as when you want to take breaks, are completely up to you. The level of autonomy will vary depending on if you are doing freelance or which gym you work at, but for the most part, you certainly have more agency over your time than a desk-bound job.

3.      Connection with people. If you are someone who enjoys creating connections with people, this job will energise you. You also expand your network with people across all walks of life. Sometimes you end up becoming friends with clients who you particularly gel well with too.

How feasible is it in your opinion to do this as a side hustle?

If you have the heart for fitness, there are very little barriers for you to do this as a side hustle. The hourly remuneration can easily exceed that of a corporate job and the only other limiting factors are knowledge and experience, and there are plenty of resources and certification courses out there to help with that.

Tell us about NCSF Uplift:

I was introduced to NCSF Uplift after completing my NCSF course. It’s a strength training programme specifically for people with special needs, run solely by volunteers. When I started volunteering, we were only running three days a week. 2 years later, we now run daily. Seeing how the programme has grown in sheer size of volunteer trainers, as well as how our Special Needs Buddies have improved in various aspects of fitness and confidence is one of the most fulfilling journeys I have ever had the privilege to undertake.
